In this print, the first collaboration between Paragon and Joana Vasconcelos, the Portuguese artist has created an intricate abstract world filled with flamboyant colour and overlapping forms. The design reflects an intimate and meditative process of drawing. The title ‘Ria Formosa’ refers to a lagoon in the south of Portugal which is famous for its migratory birds. Silhouettes of birds and shapes of shells mingle amongst bursts of colour; with blue wave-like curls undulating throughout the image it captures a sense of the variety and intensity of the natural world combined with the imaginary. By using both colour etching and blockprinting Vasconcelos preserves the craftsmanship that is pivotal in her sculptural work.
